To laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
to earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others;
to leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
to know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
This is one of my favorite poems although there is much discussion on who actually wrote the poem. Most people believe it was written by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
In reading this poem I realize that success in all our lives can be as easy as helping 3 older ladies at a gas station put air in a low tire. The gas station attendants (notice I did not say service station) refused to help.
I have to thank the attendants for allowing me the opportunity to help my fellow man. The attendant did not get the privilege of seeing the big smiles on the ladies faces coupled with a genuine appreciation on the faces of each of them.
It is that easy to succeed.
Ya baby life’s been good to me so far!!
